Process to Connect MicroFIT Renewable Generation

The following is the process customers must follow to connect a micro generation facility to Guelph Hydro's distribution system under the microFIT program offered by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

  1. Apply for a microFIT contract with the IESO.
  2. Submit the following to Guelph Hydro's Engineering Department by email to generationconnection@guelphhydro.com or by fax to 519-822-4963.
  3. Contact Guelph Hydro's Technical Services Department by email or by phone at 519-822-3017 ext. 4601 to obtain a copy of the electrical service layout.
  4. Make out a cheque payable to Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. for the new microFIT service connection fee. This fee covers the cost of the required bi-directional meter and its installation. The connection fee payable will depend on the the type of generator installed.
    • $1,695 ($1,500 plus HST) for a single-phase generator
    • $2,260 ($2,000 plus HST) for a three-phase generator
  5. Before the connection can take place, the cheque must be mailed to or dropped off at the following address:
    • Engineering Department, Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc., 395 Southgate Drive, Guelph, ON N1G 4Y1
  6. Contact Guelph Hydro's Customer Service and Billing Manager by phone at 519-822-1750 ext. 4731 to open a new microFIT generator account.
  7. Contact Guelph Hydro's Engineering Department by email or by phone at 519-822-1750 ext. 4630 to schedule the cut and reconnection of the meter base.
  8. Once the microFIT generation facility is installed, apply to the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) to arrange for an electrical inspection to ensure the installation adheres to the ESA's Electrical Guidelines for Inverter-Based Micro-Generating Facility.
  9. Once a successful inspection has taken place, the ESA will provide Guelph Hydro with the electrical inspection "Connection Authorization."
  10. Guelph Hydro will then install the new generation meter.
  11. Guelph Hydro will inform the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) once the connection has been made. The customer enters into a 20-year microFIT contract with the IESO. Once the IESO notifies Guelph Hydro that the microFIT contract has been executed, Guelph Hydro commences settlement of the new generation account at the microFIT contract price (cents/kWh generation).
